Arafune is a good leader, being the captain and seemingly the strategist of the Rank 10 B-rank Squad.[1] Boasting 8,349 usage points with Egret and 8,266 with Kogetsu[2], he is both a very skilled Sniper and a capable Attacker. He used to be quite high-ranking,[3] although his skill has been noted to have dropped since he became a Sniper.[4] Nonetheless, he remains a powerful foe to most enemies, and his versatility somewhat compensates for the lack of close-quarters combat abilities of his teammates.[5] He held his own against Yūma Kuga with Hokari's support, and, even after the latter left, Arafune managed to slow his opponent down for a short while longer, although he was never able to hit him or force him to block his attacks without cover fire.[6] He is also quite proficient as a Sniper, having reached Master Class in a eight months[3] and ranking 7th in stealth training during Sniper practice.[7]
Arafune has good reflexes, being the only person in his team to have survived Ranbanein's attack,[8] and, despite being locked in a duel with Yūma, he was able to notice the movements of other agents around him, which suggests he is rather observant.[9] He is also analytical as, by watching the logs, he managed to learn enough about Yūma's fighting style to be a challenge for him.[10] Despite losing both his legs in their duel, Arafune didn't miss a chance to quickly and accurately snipe Chika who had just revealed her whereabouts.[11]
Much of Arafune's skill is self-taught through observation, theory crafting and trial and error.[12] Border seems to put a lot of trust in his ability to pass on said knowledge: he was the mentor of Kō Murakami, the current no. 4 Attacker,[13] despite not having reached Master Class yet at the time,[14] and he was one of the three official agents who took charge of trainee Snipers when Chika Amatori enlisted[15] even though he became a Sniper relatively recently.[3] Before the away exams, Murakami listed Arafune as one of the agents he would like to work with due to his high coordination and planning.[16]

Classification Sniper |
Arafune has reached Master Class with Egret[2], his sole Sniper Trigger,[17] which speaks for a remarkable degree of proficiency with it. He managed to hit Ranbanein while the latter was flying[18] and to take out Chika immediately after she revealed her presence and despite the loss of both legs.[19] Arafune is first seen using Egret in Chapter 54 (Episode 25 in the anime). |

Classification Attacker |
Arafune has reached Master Class with Kogetsu[2], which vouches for a remarkable degree of proficiency. As a mark of his skill, he was able to wield it efficiently with only one hand[20] despite its weight[21] and one of his legs being injured.[22] He uses his free hands to hold the scabbard.[2][23] Even though his swordsmanship has deteriorated since he became a Sniper[4], he was able to hold off the likes of Yūma, although he started taking damage shortly after Hokari stopped assisting him.[4] Against him Arafune held his sword with a reverse grip[2], possibly due to the narrowness of the staircase they were fighting on, whereas he employed a natural grip to dispatch the Dogs.[24] He has been seen combining his swordsmanship with Bagworm[25] and Shield.[23] Arafune is first seen using Kogetsu in Chapter 89 (Episode 41 in the anime). |

Classification Optional |
A Trigger which prevents the user's position from being detected by Radar, and a fundamental asset to Snipers. Although Attackers are usually hindered in their movements by Bagworm,[26] Arafune is capable of craftily incorporating it in his fighting style when he fights as such, using it to hide wounds that would otherwise attract the opponent's attention[22] or to obscure their vision before striking with Kogetsu.[25] He is first seen using it in Chapter 54 (Episode 25 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Shield | |
---|---|---|
Classification Defense |
Arafune can use Shield to cover his retreat[27] or to protect his back when engaging multiple opponents with ranged attacks.[23] He seems to prefer to cast a hexagonal Shield that covers his upper body and part of his legs, as well as his head if he ducks.[27][23] Arafune is first seen using Shield in Chapter 89 (Episode 40 in the anime). |

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Did Arafune establish Attacker/Sniper methodology through self-study? Or did he have a mentor for each of them?
A: It seems he studied the logs, constructed his own theories, tried them out in Rank Wars, and then after multiple trial and error, only the bits he couldn't understand himself he sought teaching for from those more experienced.
