–Kyōsuke Karasuma about Chameleon, in Chapter 35.[1] |
Chameleon (隠密, Kamereon Lit. Secret ?) is a Optional Trigger used for stealth, that allows the user to become temporarily invisible, consuming trion during use.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Chameleon causes the user's body to progressively become transparent until it disappears from sight altogether.[2] The members of Kazama Squad have special devices installed on their uniform that glow with green light when the Trigger is activated.[2]
Overview[edit | edit source]
Chameleon did not exist two years prior to Yūma Kuga's enlistment in Border.[3] It was created shortly before Kazama Squad began participating in Rank Wars and enjoyed immediate popularity. However, Shirō Kikuchihara's Side Effect rendered it largely useless, allowing his squad to rise in the rankings and become A-rank in a short amount of time.[4]
Abilities[edit | edit source]
Chameleon renders the user invisible, allowing them to move in a good position to strike,[5] but also to evade or retreat.[6] The ability to maneuver behind the opponent's back makes it a rather powerful Trigger.[7]
However, Chameleon has a few downsides. The main one is that the user cannot utilize any other Triggers while concealed[7], which renders them vulnerable to attack[8] and prevents the activation of this Trigger against weapons with a wide area of effect.[9] Furthermore, if the target has fast enough reactions and a general knowledge of the direction a Chameleon user is coming from, they can counter the moment the opponent becomes visible to attack.[10] To avoid this, a Chameleon user can physically restrain the target long enough for an ally to finish them off.[11] Since they are invisible not only to the enemy, but also to their own teammates, Chameleon can generate coordination problems, especially with long-range fighters.[12] It was also implied to be somewhat heavy in terms of trion consumption.[5] The uniforms of the members of Kazama Squad have special devices embedded to decrease it, instead increasing the cost of their Trion Body.[13]
It should be noted that although this Trigger hides the user from sight, it does not conceal their trion signature, so they still show up on Radar,[10] which reduces its efficacy in rank wars. This weakness can be turned into an advantage by combining Chameleon with Switchbox, as the trion readings created by the latter can be utilized to mimic that of a Chameleon user.[14] Hound is an excellent counter to Chameleon, since, when set on automatic mode, it is able to detect and attack invisible foes.[15] Trion leaks can also give away the user's location.[16]

Chameleon has 11 known users within Border.[17] There used to be more, but the rapid ascent of Kazama Squad and Kikuchihara's Side Effect decreased its popularity.[4] The members of said squad are particularly noteworthy users of this Trigger.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: The round parts of Kazama Squad's uniform react when they activate Chameleon. What're they doing?
A: The uniform is embedded with a mechanism that reduces the Chameleon's Trion consumption. But it increases the cost of the Trion Body.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: While Chameleon is in use, can Hound bullets track you? And do you show up on Radar?
A: Hound bullets that use "Detection Guidance" can, but usually they are intercepted by walls and so on. Even during Stealth Mode, you still show up on Radar, so it’s possible to use that to make a rough counter-attack.
