B-Rank is the middle tier of Border's combat personnel.[1][2] B-Rank agents are official agents on active duty.[1][2]
Ranking[edit | edit source]
The ranks are comprised of 21 Squads of 2-5 members each (including Operators). B-Ranks do not historically embark on Away Missions[3], but they do defense duty around the Forbidden Zone and are mobilized in battle. B-Rank agents are not paid a salary like A-Ranks, but they are paid wages based on the Trion Soldiers they suppress on duty.[4]
According to their rank, B-rank squads are split into the three groups of Upper (1-7th place), Middle (8-14th place), and Lower (15th place and below).[5][6] The ranks of B-Rank squads are determined in Rank Wars. B-Rank squads who have ascended to the Top 2 ranks can challenge an A-rank squad in a challenge match in order to become A-rank.[6]
Emblem[edit | edit source]
All B-Rank agents have the same emblem, which has a black background, and the squad's current ranking (000 if solo), with a sword through the number. A-Rank agents get their own emblem, and they are allowed to keep their emblem even if they are demoted to B-Rank.[7]
Privileges[edit | edit source]
B-Rank Squads have their own Strategy Rooms, which the agents can customize to their liking.[8] Individual agents are able to customize their triggers to an extent[9], such as Kumagai's hand guard on her Kogetsu[9] and Murakami's Kogetsu in Round 7. [10]
Reaching B-Rank[edit | edit source]
To become B-Rank, a C-rank trainee must reach 4,000 points with their Trigger.[11][12] Snipers are special due to their consistent training regimen, and they can be promoted if they manage to stay in the top 15% for three weeks in a row.[13]
Reaching A-Rank[edit | edit source]
B-Rank squads who have ascended to the Top 2 ranks can challenge an A-rank squad in a challenge match in order to become A-rank.[6] However it is possible for an A-Rank squad to be demoted to B-rank if either the captain[14], or one of their teammates[15] breaks the rules. In the two cases this has happened, both squads were not able to promote for a set period of time[16] in their case it was for two seasons.[17][18] If this happens the demoted squad can keep the emblem until they disband.[7]
Demotion[edit | edit source]
It should be noted that it is possible for a official agent to be demoted to C-rank if their points hit below 1,500[19], currently no one has ever been demoted through this method.[19]

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Do Border agents get paid?
A: I might show it one day, but yes, agents do get paid. B-Rank Agents get a fee per Trion Soldier they defeat. A-Rank Agents have a salary + fee per Trion Soldier. C-Rank Trainees do not get paid.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Kumagai's Kogetsu has a guard, can the design of any part that isn't the blade be freely changed?
A: Consult with the Engineers, and it can be freely changed to an extent. Kumagai blocks with her sword a lot, so a guard was attached to protect her hands.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: After falling to B-Rank, did Ninomiya Squad and Kageura Squad challenge and lose to A-Rank Squads during the Rank Wars in October? Is that why they've remained B-Rank?
A: After dropping down in the ranks, they couldn't fight for a chance at promotion for a set period of time as a penalty. Something like that.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: After Attackers or Gunners amassed 4,000 points and rose to B-rank, are they demoted back to C-rank if they fall below 4,000 points in Rank Wars?
A: They aren't demoted if they fall below 4,000, but regulations say if any of their triggers ever fall below 1,500 they will be demoted and removed from their team. But there has yet to be an agent who was demoted to C-rank due to this regulation.
