–Kazuki Kurauchi, about Hornet.[1] , |
Hornet (強化追尾弾, Hōnetto Lit. Enhanced Tracking Bullet ?) is a composite bullet created through the combination of two Hound chips.[3][4]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Hornet looks identical to Hound mid-flight, but it can be distinguished from it thanks to its superior homing ability, which, depending on the movements of the target, could lead to a more varied flight path.[5]
Overview[edit | edit source]
Since composite bullets were discovered by Kōhei Izumi,[6] Hornet could not have existed until three years prior to Chika Amatori's and Yūma Kuga's enlistment in Border.[7]
Abilities[edit | edit source]
Hornet strengthens Hound's homing factor, allowing it to curve at sharper angles as it pursues the target.[1] Bullets from one cube can be given different settings to be made more difficult to block or avoid.[8] Since they look identical to Hound, the target may be lured into resorting to evasive maneuvers which are unsuited to Hound's enhanced homing factor.[5] Like other composite bullets, it is capable of damaging a trion body and cause moderate damage to constructs not made out of trion.[9]
Hornet can be utilized in trion cube form[10][11] or fired through a Gun Trigger.[12] In the latter case, the only known specific is that the firearm is set to shoot exclusively Hornet;[12] in the former, the user conjures two Hound cubes, one from the Main and one from the Sub, and merges them into a single Hornet cube.[10][11] The process lasts between one minute for inexperienced agents and two seconds for Shooters of Izumi's caliber,[13] during which the user is vulnerable to attack; for this reason, Hornet cannot be used uniformly in this configuration.[14]
Users[edit | edit source]
Hornet is known to be a rare composite bullet.[3] The only known user of this Trigger is Masataka Ninomiya.[2]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Like many other Gunner Triggers, Hornet may be named after a missile, the AGM-64 Hornet, commonly known simply as Hornet.
- Alternatively, it may be derived from the homonymous insect.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Is Ninomiya the one who created composite bullets? Is it Izumi? Or an Engineer?
A: Izumi tried it out on some kind of impulse and it worked. That is why he is called "genius-like" and "bullet idiot".

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Can Gunners use composite bullets?
A: If they set it in the gun trigger they can, but that gun then becomes "a gun that can only shoot the composite bullet".

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Izumi synthesized a Tomahawk by combining a Viper and a Meteor. Can he do that because he's a genius or could Osamu do it too with practice?
A: It's possible to do it with practice, but it would take some time. If Osamu tried to shoot a Tomahawk now, it would take him a whole minute to prepare. It only takes Izumi two seconds.
