That's the jump platform Trigger that enables aerial mobility!

Sakurako Taketomi on Grasshopper, in Chapter 89.[1]

Grasshopper (グラスホッパー, Gurasuhoppā ?) is an Optional Trigger.

    Appearance[edit | edit source]

Grasshopper is started when the user creates an azure orb in their hand, however if the user loses their hand the orb will summon where their hand hand should be.[3] the orb in turn summons one or more floating screens of light.[4] Each jump stand is square and inscribed in a larger regular quadrilateral.[5]

    Overview[edit | edit source]

The origins of this Trigger are unknown.

    Abilities[edit | edit source]

The activation of Grasshopper is signaled by the generation of a glowing orb in the user's corresponding hand[2], however if the user loses their hand the orb will summon where the hand should be.[3] The user can then summon screens of light that hover in place in any location and at any angle of their choosing.[4] Much like Shooter bullets, their number is inversely proportional to their output, and they disappear after one use.[6] By touching a jump platform, the user is propelled the direction the square faces at high speed.[7] Grasshopper also enables them to control their position while in mid-air, which makes it an asset in evasion[8] as well as feints.[9] Since it allows for aerial movement, it can negate impediments to mobility deriving from having a wounded leg[10] or from environmental conditions, such as deep snow[11] and high water.[12] However, it can only reflect physical object meaning it can be canceled out by trion-based objects such as trion bullets.[13]

Grasshopper has a great many applications aside from personal displacement. It can be utilized to support one's teammates, either by making them step on a platform[14] or to cross the map quickly in order to come to their rescue.[15] Although it is almost exclusively used by Attackers[16] to move in and out of range[17] and to attack remote or flying enemies,[9] Snipers can benefit from this Trigger too, since they can reach high ground swiftly[18] and quickly distance themselves from the enemy if spotted.[19] Grasshopper also suits more aggressive combat styles, permitting the user to build momentum before an attack[20] or to cut off the enemy's escape route.[21] If the enemy is sufficiently close, the user can launch them in the air and thus deprive them of their freedom of movement by creating a pad in front of themselves.[22] Summoning multiple platforms improves the chances of success.[23] Finally, Grasshopper can be used as a slingshot to hurl debris at the target, momentarily stunning them.[24]

    Techniques[edit | edit source]

After creating multiple platforms around the opponent, the user bounces from one to another at very high speed while slashing at the disoriented target with an Attacker Trigger.[26] According to Kō Murakami, Shun Midorikawa is a better user of this technique than Yūma Kuga.[25]

    Users[edit | edit source]

There are 10 known users of this Trigger.[16] Shun Midorikawa and Yūma Kuga are both particularly renowned for their skills with it. Yōko Katori and Kōji Oki are also notable for being, respectively, the only All-Rounder and Sniper to utilize it.

    Trivia[edit | edit source]

    • Grasshopper is very similar to the Bound seal of Yūma's Black Trigger. The two differ in that Grasshopper is less powerful, but it can summon multiple platforms.[27]
    • Kei Tachikawa was never seen activating Grasshopper, but it was confirmed in the 4th Question Corner that he used it to reach the Ilgar.
    • The acceleration applied by a single pad has shown to vary considerably: Yūma has been seen propelling himself only about a meter or so in the air with an undivided pad[8] and then launch Murakami upwards by a few meters with a pad divided at least five times[28] even as he was holding weapons as heavy as Raygust[29] and Kogetsu.[30] If this is not a mistake, it could mean that the output of Grasshopper pads can be decreased at will.
    • There was a time where Ikoma fell flat when trying to learn how to use Grasshopper, for this reason he respects Grasshopper users.[31]

    6. Daisuke Ashihara: Q: How many of Grasshopper's sheet-like things can be generated at once? And can (one of) the sheet-like thing be used over and over?
A: Like Asteroid and so on, by splitting them several can be generated at once, but the more generated the lower the power output will be for each one. The jump board disappears after one use.
