Trion (トリオン, Torion ?) is a biological power source, or energy, that resides within every living human, and possibly in other life forms as well.[1] This energy provides power for a Trigger's various abilities and functions.[citation needed]

Trion is produced by an invisible organ, better known as the Trion Gland (トリオン 器官, Torion Kikan Lit. Trion Organ ?). It is not known in the human world, but every human possesses this organ, located next to their heart.[citation needed] Every human's trion gland functions differently, like how an individual's strength varies.[citation needed] The trion gland can increase trion production if exerted regularly, much like a muscle[2], and it will likewise benefit from a good diet and rest.[2] After the age of 20, however, it stops developing[3] and starts to decay if not exerted[4], meaning it is best to train Trigger users while they are young.[citation needed] A high trion value can allow an individual to develop one or, in exceptionally rare cases, multiple Side Effects[citation needed], and plays a crucial part in the creation of a Black Trigger.[citation needed]
The functions of the trion gland are directly connected to a Trigger's power. If the same Trigger is used by a different person, differences will appear concerning their trion values.[5] While using a Trigger, the user will go into a Trion Body, which is their body made fully of trion. Their normal body goes into the Trigger holder.[6] They squirt out gas instead of blood (green and later dark grey gas in the anime). If there is a significant amount of trion loss, the body will revert to their normal body, or in the case of A and B Rank Border personnel, will initiate Bail Out. The regeneration time is proportional to the amount of trion used; the greater the trion expenditure, the longer the regeneration time.[7]
Aftokrator's Trion Receptors increase both the amount of trion an individual has and its quality as they grow.[8]
Trion Values[edit source]
Border quantifies the trion of its personnel and neighbors using a value of 1 or higher, but it is unknown how other countries do it, however Replica has shown the ability to show visualizations of a person's Trion levels.[9] Aspiring combatants with low trion tend to be rejected from Border, though they are still able to work for Border in other roles, such as Operator or Engineer. Border combatants' trion typically ranges from 4 to 9 when using normal triggers, though there are exceptions. For example, Chika Amatori has a trion value of 38, which is the highest known one in Border. On the other hand, Osamu Mikumo only has a trion value of 2, which is the lowest known one among Border's combatants. However, there are operators with a trion value of only 1. Black Triggers provide a significant boost in trion to their users, as shown with Yūichi Jin, who has a trion value of 7 when using normal triggers and a trion value of 37 when using Fujin;[10] This is due to how the trion used to make the black trigger is "crystalized".[11]
Differences in trion can manifest in a number of ways. Higher trion allows Shooters to manifest larger trion cubes when preparing to fire and also allows them and Gunners to fire more bullets. It also increases the power, range, and speed of bullets, which is also the case for Snipers, though for them, the parameter increased depends on the specific sniper trigger equipped. The durability of Shield also increases with the user's trion. Furthermore, individuals with high trion can sacrifice themselves to produce a black trigger, as Yūgo Kuga and Sōichi Mogami did.
Bullet Forms[edit source]
When Shooters use their gunner trigger it almost always appears in the shape of a cube which can be split. Most Agents choose to split the cube into either 8, 27, or 64 parts, however it has been shown that pyramids[12][13] and Tetrahedra[14][15] are also possible, however it is an advanced technique for people who want to control the number and power of the bullets in detail.[16].
It should also be noted that Nozomi Kako has a custom Hound[17] which appears as a Sphere which from which smaller sphere are emitted.[18]
Trion Quality[edit source]
Trion differs among individuals also due to its quality. How exactly this property affects it is unclear, but it has been suggested that higher-quality trion makes trion manipulation easier, which in turn improves the accuracy of one's control over their Triggers.[19]

A: Just like lung capacity and muscle strength, it can be improved somewhat, and does recover with nutrition and rest.

A: The more Trion a person has (= the more Trion that gets used in battle) the bigger the cost of constructing a Trion Body, so recreating it will take more time. Chika takes a lot of time but Osamu can return to battle fairly quickly (in about 1~2 hours time).

A: The current theory is that the Black Trigger's creator's own stats override the current user's stats. Sometimes output is even higher than the creator's typical levels, perpahs becuase creating a Black Trigger involves pouring in and condensing every last drop of one's own Trion.

A: Probably because they want to control the number and power of the bullets in detail. It seems to be a very advanced technique to divide the cube into shapes other than more cubes. Izumi could likely do it too, but he isn't so particular about the shape.
