“ | Unlike the other two Raygust is a defensive Trigger. Its blade partially transforms, like Scorpion. It has a Shield Mode which increases durability in exchange for reduced attack power. | ” |
–Shiori Usami about Raygust, in Chapter 27.[1] |
Raygust (レイガスト, Reigasuto ?) is an Attacker Trigger. Its properties change depending on whether it is set to Blade Mode (刃 モード, Burēdo Mōdo ?)[4] or Shield Mode (盾 モード, Shīrudo Mōdo ?).[1]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Raygust is composed of a handle and a much larger section of semi-transparent, glowing[5] Trion which can be manipulated at will and whose default shape is determined by the mode of the Trigger. In Blade Mode, Raygust takes the appearance of a large double-ended saber with a handguard spawning from the blade itself, also connecting to a shorter blade. In Shield Mode, Raygust's blade transforms into a tall, slightly curved shield which can be held using the haft. Depending on the user's preference, the long axes of the shield and the handle can be either parallel[6] or perpendicular to one another.[7]
The hilt of the Trigger is composed of a black handle and a slightly shorter white point at the intersection of which is a white hoop, partly bordered in black where it joins the handle. Reiji Kizaki's Raygust has a more streamlined hilt, composed of a black handle and a small, white tip shaped like a fan on either end.[4]
Overview[edit | edit source]
Raygust was developed by Raizō Terashima, at the time he was 18 (now 21[8]), and was one of the top Kogetsu users, when he became annoyed with Kogetsu's popularity and the increasing power of Gunner bullets. He thus invented a new weapon to counter them with Shield and Scorpion as a basis,[2] making it the last of the three main Attacker Triggers currently in use to be created.
Abilities[edit | edit source]
Raygust is considered a defensive Trigger.[1] It weighs more[9] and boasts lower offensive abilities than Scorpion and Kogetsu.[10][3] For these reasons, it is by far the least popular Attacker Trigger.[9] Nonetheless, it is a powerful, versatile tool in the right hands. The blade can be shapeshifted to suit the user's fighting style,[11] and its size can be reduced to make it more aerodynamic.[12] In Shield Mode, the malleable component has been morphed to anchor the user to the ground to brace for a strong impact,[13] to immobilize an opponent against a wall,[14][15] subsequently creating an opening to attack through,[16] or to catch the opponent's weapon at close quarters and throw them off-balance.[7]
The offensive power of the blade can seemingly be increased with Thruster, a combination which was said to be able to counter the protection awarded by Escudo.[17] This was demonstrated when Kō Murakami's accelerated Raygust was able to effortlessly smash Osamu Mikumo's when the latter was in Blade Mode,[18] which was durable enough to withstand a clash with Kogetsu[19] despite being less resistant than normal due to the wielder's low trion levels. Raygust's performance is in fact heavily influenced by the user's trion amount.[20][21] Its durability can be greatly augmented in return for a decrease in its offensive abilities by switching to Shield Mode,[1] a state in which Raygust can withstand a prolonged assault carried out with Attacker Triggers[22] as well as several rounds of Gunner Triggers without breaking.[23] Thruster further increases a Raygust user's options, not only accelerating their slashes, but also allowing them to move in mid-air at high speed,[24][25] to push back opponents,[26][27] and to propel Raygust itself at the target.[28][12]
Like firearms and Kogetsu,[29] Raygust can be turned off in order to use other Triggers without the handle being dispelled, although the blade or shield will disappear.[30] This allows the user not to spend trion and lose precious instants to conjure the handle anew every time the Trigger is needed.[29] If the handle is lost or damaged, it can nonetheless be conjured again.[31][32]

Raygust is known to be unpopular among Border agents,[9] counting only four users: Osamu Mikumo,[33] Reiji Kizaki,[9] Kō Murakami[34] and Yukimaru Ichijō,[35] although there might be more users among agents who do not participate in Rank Wars.[36] The former three users show a preference for Shield Mode over Blade Mode.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- If there is indeed a rule according to which official agents must have two Shields in their Trigger set (one of which may be replaced with another Defense Trigger),[37] Raygust users might be exempt from it: in fact, Osamu is the known only agent, excluding those using Bagworm Tag and Kyōsuke Karasuma who has Escudo, to have only one Shield equipped.[38]
- Osamu did not know about Shield Mode until Shiori Usami explained Raygust's abilities to Yūma Kuga.[9]
- This Trigger is similar in appearance to the Escudo from "Talented Elite Jin".

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Please tell us when Raygust was developed as well as the story behind its development.
A: Raizō Terashima (18), a top class Kogetsu wielder at the time, got pissed off at the enhancing and popularity of bullet triggers and transferred to Engineer, where he made Raygust as an anti-bullet trigger blade with Shield and Scorpion as the base. This was when Terashima gained weight.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: During the battle versus Ranbanein, Okudera used Full Guard; does that mean you can use other Triggers if you just put Kogetsu in a sheath without deactivating it?
A: Even without putting it in a sheath you can turn the Kogetsu off, but the sharpness will become zero. You won’t be able to use it and you can’t deactivate it either, so it’s a big hindrance. Deactivating Kogetsu and then remaking one later when you need it again will mean it’s not a hindrance, but it will use up trion. It is the same with gun-type Triggers.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Are there any branches besides Tamakoma and Suzunari?
A: Border has 6 branches: Tamakoma, Suzunari, Wataayu (綿鮎 ?), Yumite District (弓手町 ?), Hayanuma (早沼 ?), and Kuma (久摩 ?). Its personnel are mostly those who prioritise work or school and don’t aim for A-Rank (they do not participate in the twice a week Rank Wars). The branches are placed on the outer edge of the Forbidden Zone. Other than Tamakoma, the branches function as a point of contact for local residents.
