“ | Hey, no way! We gotta keep this pace until Oki takes out Amatori! | ” |
–Satoshi Mizukami to Tatsuhito Ikoma, in Chapter 157.[1] |
Satoshi Mizukami (水上 敏志, Mizukami Satoshi ?) is a B-rank Shooter and a member of Ikoma Squad.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Mizukami is a tall, thin, light-skinned young man with a voluminous shock of messy, orange hair and small eyes with light-colored slit irises.
Mizukami's uniform is comprised of a vermillion, white-zipped jacket. A horizontal white line runs across the chest portion roughly at the height of his armpits, whereas on the back it bends into a flat V-shape pointing downwards,[12] with an ornamental button right above the tip.[13] On the right breast, the white line encircles Border's logo, above which is emblazoned the B-rank emblem. Everything above the white line is black in color, including the high collar, which Oki keeps open to reveal a round-collared undershirt; the only exception are the vermillion plain button epaulets. The sleeves are also black until roughly halfway through the humerus, after which they turn vermillion, and disappear into Mizukami's thick gloves about an inch past the elbow. The gloves are black with a gray palm and a thin brown buckle that encircles them near the cuff.[12] The black portion of the sleeves and the collar bear a square motif that suggests padding. The uniform is completed by black pants with front and back pockets,[13] gray-brown boots that reach halfway up Mizukami's calves,[12] and a pair of rectangular goggles with protruding lenses and a vermillion strap which he keeps around his neck, facing frontward.[13]
Personality[edit | edit source]
Like most of his teammates, Mizukami is laid-back,[14][15][16][17] although he tends to be more aware and mindful of the circumstances of a rank war.[18][19] Despite not being the captain, he is the de facto tactician of the squad, monitoring the state of the battle and assigning tasks to his teammates.[20][21][22][1][23][24][25] On these[22][23] and other occasions[26][27] he may appear cold, surly, or querulous. However, it seems that the only shortcomings to get him fleetingly upset are his own.[28][29]
In a provisional leadership position, he has been shown to consistently lie and deceive his teammates for the sake of team tactics;[30] opposition is met with unabashed rebukes or a reaffirmation of his stance.[31][32][30] This was met with many conflicting opinions from evaluators, some of whom determined the success of his strategy outweighed potential conflict down the line.[33]
Quotes[edit | edit source]
- (To Maori Hosoi) "You got your cute points, Mario!"[34]
- (To Tatsuhito Ikoma) "You just gotta try again, don'cha?"[15]
- (To Ikoma) "You're imagining things. You totally just missed!"[35]
- (To Kōji Oki) "Don't blow it. Yer gonna lose popularity."[36]
- (To Oki) "Pull yourself together! We're comin' to ya now!"[37]
- (To Ikoma) "You lost the will to fight really fast...!"[38]
- (To Ikoma) "Hey, no way! We gotta keep this pace until Oki takes out Amatori!"[1]
- (To Hyuse) "Took long enough. But you're done."[39]
- (To Oki) "Seriously, Oki? Y'couldn't've use those skills to save our butts instead?"[27]
- "Shōgi's just a game. It has almost nothing in common with the tactics of our rank wars. In shōgi, a pawn that comes out swinging won't lose."[40]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- "Satoshi" (敏志 ?) is composed of 敏 ("fast, quick, clever, smart" ?) and 志 (purpose, will, determination, aspiration, ambition, annals ?). "Mizukami" (水上 ?) means "on water, aquatic, maritime, overwater, headwaters".
- Coincidentally, his name has the same reading as that of the manga author and illustrator Satoshi Mizukami.
- Like the rest of his teammates (with the exception of Minamisawa), he speaks in Kansai dialect.
- He likes rakugo, shōgi, udon, and spring rolls.[4] The former is also his hobby, and he has memorized between 20 and 30 classics.[41]
- He displayed a small show of his rakugo by imitating Teruya in Chapter 222.[42]
- It is said that his shōgi skills are among the best in Border.[41]
- Additionally, he went to a school for amateur shōgi players who wish to be professionals, a Shōreikai establishment under the Japan Shogi Association.[43]
- Despite not going to an elite school, Mizukami has excellent grades.[41]
- Ōji's nickname for him[3] is a pun on his surname and the English word "coming", due to the similar pronunciations in Japanese.
- His icon is a broccoli stalk[3] due to the shape of his hair resembling this vegetable.
- The author gave Mizukami the moniker of "Lying Broccoli" due to his habit of calling the wrong Trigger on purpose and the shape of his hair, describing him as a "beta-carotene-rich vegetable."[41]

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: In Chapter 222, Mizukami and Kon get along swimmingly. Do they have any history, beyond just being in the same grade?
A: I don't know about "swimmingly," but since they were both so academically talented, the school often lumped them together in various ways.

Daisuke Ashihara: Since Mizukami, and Kon are in the same year at school and both had excellent grades, we were sometimes grouped together by the school.
He also seems to be good friends with Kunichika, Toma, and Tachikawa, who he can talk about silly things with
