–Makoto Chano about Ranbanein, in Chapter 54.[1] |
Makoto Chano (茶野 真, Chano Makoto ?) is a B-rank Gunner and the captain of Chano Squad.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Chano is a light-skinned, androgynous youth of average build. They have medium-length hair that obscures their left eye and is usually covered by a Beanie sporting an initialized badge. Their uniform is comprised of a double-breasted jacket that folds over itself on the left side, with two groups of four buttons each and a belt wrapped around the end of each sleeve. Above the topmost left button is the B-rank logo with the Squad's position emblazoned on it, while Border's logo is located on the lateral side of each upper arm. The turtle-necked undershirt is black. The attire is completed by a pair of pants with front pockets and a belt with one holster on each side.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Chano is serious, hard-working,[4] and extremely disciplined, saluting Masafumi Shinoda even when taking orders via radio.[5] They did not hesitate to attack two humanoid Neighbors when they believed other Border agents were being threatened.[6][1] They also seem to be somewhat impulsive, as they attacked Yūma as soon as they suspected him of being a neighbor, despite him being in the middle of fighting a trion warrior.[6]
Quotes[edit | edit source]
- (About Ranbanein) "This time for sure, a humanoid Neighbor has appeared!!"[1]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- "Makoto" is a unisex name (meaning it can be used for both genders) which, when written with the kanji 真, means "true, pure, genuine". "Chano" (茶野 ?) means "tea field".
- Chano likes Nasi goreng, collecting hats, and making badges[2] (which might imply that Chano probably made the badges they and Fujisawa wear).
- According to the author's character notes, Chano was originally supposed to be a cross-dressing girl, but he decided to ignore them because it seemed troublesome.[4] It is unclear whether this means that Chano is a boy or a girl.
- Chano has begun to suspect that Yūma is a Neighbor.[7]

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: How much awareness is there in Border that Yūma is a Neighbor?
A: At this point, excluding Tamakoma Branch, it seems the only ones who know are Border's upper management and those who participated in the fight over the Black Trigger (volumes 3, and Volume 4). People like Chano Squad are also pretty suspicious.
