“ | Okudera and Koarai from Azuma Squad aren't so strong alone, but in a short-distance team combat, they're as good as my squad. With these two in the team, they can take down various high level opponents. And best of all, Azuma Squad has the old leader of the best A-Rank Squad, the first Sniper: Haruaki Azuma. | ” |
–Sōya Kazama about Azuma Squad, in Chapter 112.[1] |
Azuma Squad (東 隊, Azuma-tai ?) is an squad led by Haruaki Azuma. The squad has changed all its members except for Azuma himself at least twice before its present composition.[12] In its first iteration Azuma Squad was able to rank 1st in A-Rank. The former members have since become captains of their own squads, with the exception of their Operator. The second round of Azuma Squad, ranking unknown, eventually became Katagiri Squad. At the start of the current season, the present generation was ranked 6th in B-Rank.
Members[edit | edit source]
Uniform[edit | edit source]
In its current generation, the squad's uniform consists of a dark teal jacket with black stripes running through the sleeves and around the collar and also around the edges of the jacket, black pants, and brown boots. The jacket also has a pocket on the right chest, the squad's emblem on the left chest, and Border's emblem on each shoulder. In Round 4, they wore an all white version of this uniform for camouflage.
Background[edit | edit source]
The first generation used to be the No. 1 A-Rank Squad.[1] After it was disbanded, all of its combatants have since become the captains of their own squads. They all appear to have a good relationship nevertheless. It was later revealed that Ren Tsukimi was their operator.[2]
The members of the second generation would later go on to form Katagiri Squad.[3]
Plot[edit | edit source]
Large-Scale Invasion Arc[edit | edit source]
Azuma Squad is sent to fight off Trion Soldiers when they encounter a Rabbit. The Rabbit proceeds to easily defeat Koarai and Okudera, so Azuma shoots them before they can be captured. The other B-Rank teams come to support Azuma, when they are confronted by Ranbanein. Ranbanein's superior firepower causes him to have an initial advantage over the B-Rank teams. Azuma decides that if the battle were to become arbitrary gunfight, Ranbanein would emerge victorious. However, the arrival of Izumi, Yoneya, and Midorikawa allows the B-Rank teams to fight him and eventually win.
B-Rank Wars Arc[edit | edit source]
Azuma Squad goes up against Tamakoma Second, Ninomiya Squad, and Kageura Squad in Round 4. Koarai and Okudera corner Inukai in a building, and them along with Tsuji and Osamu hang out in there until Azuma takes first blood by shooting Osamu through a wall. Later, the two get into a skirmish with Kageura, Yuma, and Tsuji. The two are cut down by Kageura and Yuma, and Tsuji is shot down by Azuma. They would finish the round with 2 points.
They fight Round 5 against Yuba Squad and Kageura Squad while the Galapoula Invasion is going on.
Azuma Squad goes against Kageura Squad and Tamakoma Second again, in addition to Suzunari First during Round 7. Koarai and Okudera work together to first chase down Osamu, and then take out Ema. Okudera is blown apart by Chika's Meteor, and when asked about what to do the two younger combatants agree on a retreat. Following the conclusion of the round, Azuma tells the two that they can now use subtriggers.
Azuma Squad wins Round 8 by catching Kageura off guard with their new triggers, allowing for Azuma to shoot him.
Away Mission Test Arc[edit | edit source]
All combatants of Azuma Squad participate in the test. Azuma is immediately chosen by Ninomiya for his Squad 8, while Koarai ends up on Kuruma's Squad 5 and Okudera on Kodera's Squad 6. As there are more operators than mock squads, Hitomi is one of three operators to help with A-Rank evaluation.
