Azuma has been the captain of three different generations of Azuma Squad. the first generation, which consisted of Nozomi Kako[1][2], Masataka Ninomiya[1][2], Shūji Miwa[1][2], and Ren Tsukimi[1][2], said squad was able to reach A-rank no. 1.[3] the second generation whose rank was unknown, consisted of Takaaki Katagiri[4], Yukimaru Ichijō[4], and Karin Yuitsuka[4], with Tōichirō Momozono joining near the end.[4] the current generation is currently ranked B-Rank #6[5], which consists of Tsuneyuki Okudera, Noboru Koarai, and Mako Hitomi. He has had several other pupils whom he mentored in strategy[6][7], a field he excels in. Together with his aptitude for leadership, he is held in high esteem by other Border agents, who will seek his help and follow his directives in battle even if they belong to other squads.[8] due to this, he was able to take command against Ranbanein which was a major contrabustion to Ranbanein's defeat.[9] He can make accurate guesses about the unfolding of a conflict from its early stages and act accordingly[10], on top of having a reliable stock of tactics ready for multiple scenarios.[11][12] His precise and insightful commentary of Rank Wars is very popular among agents[7], including the no. 1 solo combatant[13] Kei Tachikawa[14], to the point of drawing them to spectate matches.[15]
His latest mentees are the two Attackers in B-rank Azuma Squad[16], who while not the strongest individually[17], their teamwork is second only to Kazama Squad.[17] He is Border's first Sniper[3] and remains one of the most skilled fighters of position[7] with him currently being the no. 3 Sniper.[18] His skills are such that he can hit moving targets from far away, and take aim and switch targets at remarkable speed.[19] Hyuse was wary of Chika firing Meteor while Azuma might have a visual on her for fear that he'd be able to hit the bullet before or shortly after she released it, causing her to self-destruct.[20] Azuma can also snipe through multiple walls[21] by combining complex data and making fine adjustments on the spot.[22] Furthermore, he is capable of accurately selecting the Sniper Trigger most suited to the situation at hand.[23] His skillset as the perfect Sniper is completed by his proficiency in stealth. Azuma is in fact notoriously elusive[24], having been forced to Bail Out only once in the sixth matches his squad fought during the latest season of rank wars due to all three opposing teams focusing their fire on him.[25] Even Masataka Ninomiya, the no. 2 solo combatant, no. 1 Shooter[26] and Azuma's former student[27], was convinced that it would be impossible to find him if he did not open fire[24] and preferred to hide rather than lure him out despite possessing enough Trion to block his Ibis.[28] Masato Kageura, a top Attacker famous for his aggressive fighting style, did the same[29], as Azuma is one of the only two people in Border not to trigger his Side Effect thanks to his ability to fight impassionately.[30]
Outside of his work as an agent, Azuma is a postgraduate student who conducts experiments to determine the composition of Trion.[31] He has also researched military history[31] and tactics.[32] Additionally, he is a skilled mahjong player[33] and fisher.[34]
Triggers[edit | edit source]

Type Normal | Ibis | |

Classification Sniper |
Despite its low bullet speed, Azuma made it his main offensive Trigger, compensating for that downside by predicting the target's movements.[7] This skill, in conjunction with his accuracy, enabled him to hit Ranbanein while the latter was flying.[35] Azuma can also take out an enemy by sniping through multiple walls[21], an extraordinary feat which he can accomplish by combining observational data from himself and his teammates as well as detailed topographical information.[22] However, he rarely does so[36], due to the difficulty of the shot[36], with Ayatsuji thinking it was only possible due to Azuma Squad being able to pick the map.[36] Nonetheless, on at least one occasion he used Ibis to fire after revealing his position[37], possibly capitalizing on his ability to anticipate their movements as well as on the general impossibility of stopping this rifle with Shield[38] or Full Guard.[39] It is also his Trigger of choice to fight at mid-range.[40] He seems to prefer to remove Ibis's bipod to carry it more easily.[41][42] On one occasion he had its color changed to white to camouflage in the snow.[3] He is first seen using this Trigger in Chapter 44 (Episode 22 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Lightning | |
---|---|---|
Classification Sniper |
Azuma is extremely competent with Lightning. With his ability to change targets at incredible speed, he can make the most of its high rate of fire, shooting Yūma in different spots so he could not defend[43] and hitting Hiro Kitazoe's Meteor bullets in mid-air without wasting a single shot[19], a feat that the Gunner, a former A-Rank agent with a capable Sniper on his own team, regarded as outstanding.[37] Azuma was first seen using Lightning in Chapter 114 (Episode 69 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Dummy Beacon | |
---|---|---|
Classification Optional |
Azuma uses Dummy Beacon to gain a tactical advantage on the enemy, disturbing their Radar.[44] He sets them in locations which he anticipates will be key to resolving the conflict.[10] In general, he sends out only a few, but on one occasion he filled an entire mall with them[44], enlisting his Operator's help to activate them all at the same time[45] and have them give off his teammates' trion signatures as well.[44] Although deploying many Dummy Beacons is very trion-consuming[44], it has the additional benefit of adding another layer to the diversion wherein if the opponent focuses on attempting to tell the decoys apart from the signatures of their opponents by their movements, the split focus will make them easier for Azuma to snipe.[10] Azuma is first seen using Dummy Beacon in Chapter 169 (Episode 89 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Bagworm | |
---|---|---|
Classification Optional |
As a Sniper, it is essential for Azuma to use Bagworm in order to prevent his Trion signature, and therefore his position, from being picked up by Radar or similar Triggers. If he has previous knowledge of the battlefield, he can have engineers modify Bagworm's color in order to camouflage himself, making himself even harder to find.[42] On one occasion he conjured and then took off his Bagworm to serve as a decoy.[46] Azuma is first seen using Bagworm in Chapter 58 (Episode 27 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Shield | |
---|---|---|
Classification Defense |
Owing to his proficiency in stealth, Azuma rarely needs to activate Shield, but when he does he seems to prioritize his vitals even if it means leaving his legs vulnerable. He has only been seen erecting a hexagonal barrier.[47] Azuma is first seen using Shield in Chapter 175 (Episode 91 in the anime). |

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: What is Azuma studying in graduate school?
A: In the affiliated college there are secret Trion research facilities, and he does experiments that aren't done in HQ's labs (experiments that don't have immediate applications but are necessary in clarifying the composition of Trion) there with a group, also military history.

Daisuke Ashihara: Q: Just where did Azuma learn a Sniper's skills and mindset?
A: Azuma likes learning from experience, so it's mostly from training or Rank Wars, learning through implementation and failure. He also dabbled a bit in military books and so on, but real guns and trigger weapons are quite different so it was just for reference.
