    Shield[edit | edit source]

    Shield Users
    Top Brass
    Masafumi Shinoda
It's suggested by Enedora that Shinoda has possibly summoned a barrier inside his own Trion Body in order to protect himself from Borboros' internal blades.[1] He first uses it in Chapter 71 (Episode 31 in the anime).
    A-Rank
    Kōhei Izumi

Izumi can create the Shield at the precise area of attack. Thanks to his high Trion, it is very durable, withstanding for a short time the combined firepower of Arashiyama and Tokieda. He is able to use Full Guard strategically, pretending to be in Full Attack and luring a Sniper into shooting, causing them to reveal their position while being fully protected. With Full Guard, he can stop Chelidon's destructive beams.[2]
    Sōya Kazama
Kazama prefers to dodge attacks, but when needed he has been shown to use Shield when necessary. namely he used it to block Kitora, and Tokieda's Asteroid bullets[3], as well as from Osamu's Slow Buckshot when he was getting pushed back.[4] Kazama first uses Shield in Chapter 26 (Episode 14 in the anime).
    Shun Midorikawa

Midorikawa uses Shield in attempt to block Alektor[5] He is also able to activate Full Guard in front of a moving ally, protecting them as they prepare to attack.[6] So far Midorikawa has only used it in combination with other agents.[6] Midorikawa is first seen using Shield in Chapter 60 (Episode 27 in the anime).
    Jun Arashiyama
Border's Main Defense Trigger, which erects a mobile barrier in a location chosen by the user. Arashiyama often gives his Shield a peculiar rectangular shape.[7] In the Manga, Arashiyama first uses Shield in Chapter 30, however in the Anime, he uses it sooner in Episode 15.
    Ai Kitora
Due to her low trion level Kitora's Shield is more fragile than those of other combatants.[8] However, she has shown to be able to compensate for it by activating the Shield's Fixed Mode, which increases its durability and allows for omnidirectional protection at the expense of the user's ability to move.[9]
    Mitsuru Tokieda
Border's default Defense Trigger, which erects a mobile barrier in a location chosen by the user. Tokieda can use it on an ally to protect their blind spots. Having defended both himself and Kitora from Kōhei Izumi's powerful Full Attack Asteroid, Tokieda has also shown to be able to morph the Shield so as to protect multiple targets whithout sacrificing too much of its durability.
    Futaba Kuroe
When guarding against the Idras attacks, she made shield large enough to fully protect her head and torso in it's default hexagonal shape.[10] Futaba is first seen using Shield in Chapter 129 (Episode 75 in the Anime).
    Shūji Miwa
Miwa has demonstrated the capacity to divide it into a myriad of smaller Shields to defend against Alektor's bullets[11], without them hindering his swordplay.[12] Miwa is first seen using Shield in Chapter 76 (Episode 34 in the anime).
    Tōru Narasaka
Narasaka uses this trigger to defend both himself, and Akane Hiura from a pack of Dogs[13], he made it large enough to protect both of their heads and torsos in it's default hexagonal shape, leaving only his legs exposed. Narasaka is first seen using Shield in Chapter 124 (Episode 74 in the anime).
    Reiji Kizaki
When Reiji uses his mini gun and the enemy returns fire[14][15], he can deploy a Shield[14], or hide behind Karasuma's Escudo.[15] Reiji first uses Shield in Chapter 131 (Episode 76 in the Anime).
    Kyōsuke Karasuma
Karasuma seemingly prefers using Escudo[16][17] When Karasuma uses Shield, he puts it up around his firearm, to keep shooting while under attack[18], Similar to how he uses Escudo.[16][17] Or uses it to defend himself from incoming bullets.[10][19]
    B-Rank
    Masataka Ninomiya

Due to his extremely vast amount of trion, Ninomiya's Shield is much more durable than most. He can counter Egret with a Shield about twice as large as the focused Shields of other agents.[20] His Full Guard can even fully stop an Ibis shot.[21] In rank wars, he occasionally casts a Shield to protect an opponent in order to defeat them himself and snatch the point.[21] Ninomiya is first seen using Shield in Chapter 111.
    Sumiharu Inukai
Inukai is highly skilled in using Shield, actively altering its shape in a fluid manner to adapt to battlefield changes.[22] As a Gunner, he puts it around his weapon to shoot while protecting himself[23] which is strong enough to block Yuba's Asteroid Bullets[24], however the gap led to his hand getting blown off.[24] He can instantly create a focused version to stop a Sniper's bullet,[25] or to block a Raygust in Shield Mode in close quarters combat.[26] When Inukai needs to run away, he can use focused shields to block Asteroid bullets[27] Inukai first uses Shield in Chapter 112 (Episode 68 in the Anime).
    Shinnosuke Tsuji

Though he generally casts Shield in its default hexagonal shape,[28][29][30][31][32][33] Tsuji will resort to a hemispherical[34] or spherical[31] barrier to guard against explosives. He is quick and precise enough with his summoning of Shield to intercept Yuba's fire with focused Shields,[28][29][30][31] as well as an Ibis shot originating from behind him,[35] although on the latter occasion the barrier was easily pierced.[33] His accuracy extends to remote Shields cast to protect his allies.[28][32] Tsuji is first seen using Shield in Chapter 113 (Episode 68 in the anime).
    Osamu Mikumo
Since Raygust already has a shield mode[36], Osamu doesn't usually use it. Osamu used this Trigger to block a Hyuse-type Rabbit's magnet attack.[37] additionally he has used shield in combination with raygust's shield mode for increased defense against Rei Nasu's Viper Attack[38], as well as Yōko Katori, and Rokurō Wakamura's Asteroid barriage.[39] Lastly he used it against Sumiharu Inukai used Asteroid[40] due to trigger side restrictions. He was first seen using it in Chapter 69 (Episode 31 in the anime).
    Yūma Kuga

Yūma can deploy his Shield extremely quickly, which has prevented him from bailing out on multiple occasions,[41][42][43][44] also intercepting Lightning fire[45][46] as well as frontal Egret shots,[47] although he may fail to block rapid fire from the former[45] and to compress his Shield enough to negate sneak attacks with the latter.[48] He almost always attaches his Shield to his wrist, although there are exceptions.[49] Although he tends to maintain Shield's hexagonal shape, he has also erected hemispherical barriers to protect himself from explosions.[50] In a pinch he can also maximize his defenses by activating Full Guard.[41] Yūma is first seen using Shield in Chapter 88 (Episode 40 in the anime).
    Chika Amatori

Thanks to her immense trion capacity, Chika's Shield is extremely durable and capable of withstanding not only sustained Asteroid fire[51] and Egret shots despite not being focused,[52] but even Ibis.[53] Chika is also capable of casting Full Guard in front of her teammates to protect them,[54] rescinding it at the moment of their counter[55] and using it in Fixed Mode.[56] Chika is first seen using Shield in Chapter 113 (Episode 69 in the anime).
    Hyuse

Hyuse maintains the hexagonal shape of his Shield, generally erecting it in front of his chest when going up against a Gunner or Shooter. His go-to size seems to be fairly large, covering his whole body if he crouches.[57][58] However, he can also create a smaller one that protects only his upper body.[59] Unlike other owners of mid-range Triggers, Hyuse does not seem fond of keeping up his Shield while firing, preferring to bide his time until an occasion to counter presents itself, and summoning it again right afterwards if needed.[57] If he plans to remain stationary, he defends with Escudo instead and uses Shield only to block attacks that can circumvent the former.[60] Despite his enormous trion reserves, not even Hyuse's Shield can block Ibis,[61] although he can do so with Full Guard.[62] Hyuse is first seen using Shield in Chapter 170 (Episode 89 in the anime).
    Masato Kageura

Due to his Side Effect and aggressive fighting style, Kageura rarely deploys his Shield. When he does, he maintains its default hexagonal shape and makes it broad enough to defend most of his torso and head,[63] so that two barriers will protect most of his body.[64][65] One of his Shields is durable enough to withstand Masataka Ninomiya's unfocused Full Attack Hound bombardment,[66] while his Full Guard did not crack or let any shots through when exposed to half of Hyuse's Viper bullets.[65] Kageura is first seen using Shield in Chapter 115 (Episode 70 in the anime).
    Yuzuru Ema
Ema uses Shield when attacked by a mid-ranged fighter, whether to escape[67] or to set up his next shot. In the latter case he will cast it with its standard size and hexagonal shape, protecting his torso and part of his head and legs. This Shield will be slightly off-center to allow him to retaliate, as he rests his rifles against his right shoulder.[68] When trying to escape Ninomiya he summoned a slightly wider barrier, possibly in order to minimize the surface of his body exposed to scattered bullets in the brief instant before he jumped off the building, even if the decrease in durability caused it to break almost immediately.[67] Ema is first seen using Shield in Chapter 113 (Episode 69 in the anime).
    Hiro Kitazoe
Kitazoe summons his Shield to protect himself while engaging other ranged fighters, casting it in its default hexagonal shape and regular size, which is large enough to guard his upper body and part of his head.[69][70] Since he supports his assault rifle with his right shoulder, that side of his body is more exposed to enemy fire, although he can fully retreat behind his Shield if needed.[71] He can also cast it remotely to protect his allies.[72] Kitazoe is first seen using Shield in Chapter 167 (Episode 88 in the anime).
    Tatsuhito Ikoma

Ikoma casts Shield in its default hexagonal shape to defend against Gunner Triggers.[73][74][75][76][77] His Shields are generally wide enough to comfortably protect his head and torso.[73][74][75] In round eight, he activated Full Guard after feigning an Ikoma Senkū[77], presumably in order to retaliate right after the target launches their counter. Ikoma is first seen using Shield in Chapter 187 (Episode 97 in the anime).
    Satoshi Mizukami

Mizukami casts Shield in its default hexagonal shape, adapting its size, and consequently its durability, to the requirements of the situation.[78][79] He can summon it from afar to support a teammate,[78] and has demonstrated the ability to alter its size and reposition it rather quickly.[79] Mizukami is first seen using Shield in Chapter 189.
    Kōji Oki
Oki appears to prefer to cast Shield in its default size and hexagonal shape.[80] He can cast his two Shields at different distances to intercept bullets coming from different angles while remaining on the move.[81] His sense of positioning is keen enough for him to block part of Masataka Ninomiya's Hornet barrage and survive unscathed, albeit narrowly.[81] Oki is first seen using Full Guard in Chapter 190 (Episode 98 in the anime).
    Kai Minamisawa

Minamisawa uses Shield extensively as part of his combat style, as it allows him to defend himself while keeping his hands free. He can cast it in many different shapes and sizes, appearing to favor the standard hexagonal shape against linear attacks[82][83][84][85], a round one to protect himself from Hound[86][87], and a spherical one to ward off explosions.[88] After closing in on a user of Gunner Triggers behind a Shield, he can shrink it right before his own attack so that it will not hinder him.[89] His Full Guard is sturdy enough to allow him to emerge unscathed from Kurauchi's Salamander bombardment[90] as well as to survive Takuma Yuba's unexpected fire, countering which testifies to Minamisawa's ability to switch to a defensive stance remarkably swiftly.[82] Perhaps partly because of this, he shows a preference for entering Full Guard rather than casting a single, wide Shield.[83][85] Despite his undeniable skill, sudden, multi-directional attacks can bypass his guard.[87][78] Minamisawa is first seen using Shield in Chapter 153 (Episode 83 in the Anime).
    Kazuaki Ōji
When guarding against Osamu's Asteroid, he made it large enough to fully protect his head and torso in it's default hexagonal shape, leaving only his legs exposed.[91][92] Ōji is first seen using it in Chapter 156.
    Kazuki Kurauchi
When guarding against Mizukami's Hound, he made it large enough to fully protect his head and torso in it's default hexagonal shape, leaving only his legs exposed as he jumped away.[93] Kurauchi first used it in Chapter 154 (Episode 84 in the Anime).
    Yutaka Kashio
When guarding against Mizukami's Hound, he made it large enough to fully protect his head and torso in it's default hexagonal shape, leaving only his legs exposed as he jumped away.[93] He is first seen using it in Chapter 154, However in the Anime he seemingly used it off screen.
    Rei Nasu

Though Nasu prefers to use the environment to protect herself[94] and will dodge rather than defend when given the chance,[95] when she is unable to rely on her mobility she will not hesitate to cast Shield or go into Full Guard. She favors large, round or elliptical Shields which protect her head, midsection,[96][97] and occasionally part of her lower body.[98][99] Due to using it when surrounded by enemies, her Full Guard tends to consist in a Shield summoned before her person and another behind her.[97][99] Although she is quick enough to put up a Shield when sniped at with Egret within her own range, Nasu might not be capable of anticipating the target and focusing it.[94] She is first seen using Shield in Chapter 96 (Episode 44 in the anime).
    Yūko Kumagai
Kumagai's usual fighting style consists in holding her Kogetsu with both hands and activating Shield when needed,[100] and specifically a hexagonal focused one against other Attackers.[101] She appears to prefer to block with her sword alone,[102][103] saving her Shield only for emergencies. Murakami in fact displayed the ability to break it with a single swing, and although the focused Shield allowed Kumagai to avoid bailing out, it was unable to prevent her from taking considerable damage.[101] Against ranged fighters she deploys a hexagonal Shield from the back of her right forearm which protects most of her upper body.[104] Kumagai is first seen using Shield in Chapter 99 (Episode 45 in the anime).
    Takuma Yuba
Yuba appears to rarely deploy his Shield, rather preferring to blast away at his opponent with both handguns at once — overcoming them with his speed on the draw, muzzle velocity, and sheer firepower. When he does use it, he casts it in its default hexagonal shape and maintains activation only long enough to escape imminent danger.[105] Yuba is first seen using Shield in Chapter 186 (Episode 96 in the Anime).
    Yukari Obishima
Obishima casted Shield in the standard hexagonal shape when against Hyuse's "Asteroid" Attack.[76] The Shield was large enough to cover her head, and upper body, however this may due to her proximity to the former's Escudo.[76] Obishima is first seen using Shield in Chapter 188 (Episode 97 in the anime).
    Tatsuya Kuruma

Kuruma is almost always seen firing from behind a Shield while wielding only one rifle, with the exception of when he fights alongside Betsuyaku. In this case, the two combine their Shields to protect themselves from all directions without making their defense too thin.[106] He has also cast it from afar to protect an ally,[107] also overlapping his Full Guard with those of other agents.[6] Kuruma is first seen using Shield in Chapter 60 (Episode 27 in the anime).
    Kō Murakami
Although he generally uses Raygust for defense, Murakami can create a concentrated Shield to block attacks that Raygust alone cannot stop. Like the latter, he can tilt it to partially disperse the power of the incoming attack.[108] He is first seen using it in Chapter 134 (Episode 77 in the anime).
    Taichi Betsuyaku
Border's default Defense Trigger that enables the user to create barrier that can block opponent's attacks. By combining his Shield with his captain's, the two can protect themselves from all directions without making their defense too thin.[106] He can also cast it in its hexagonal shape to defend himself while fighting at Gunner range.[109] Taichi first uses it in Chapter 100 (Episode 46 in the anime).
    Tetsuji Arafune
Arafune can use Shield to cover his retreat[110] or to protect his back when engaging multiple opponents with ranged attacks.[111] He seems to prefer to cast a hexagonal Shield that covers his upper body and part of his legs, as well as his head if he ducks.[110][111] Arafune is first seen using Shield in Chapter 89 (Episode 40 in the anime).
    Atsushi Hokari
Hokari has been seen casting a round or oval Shield from the side of his left arm which was wide enough to protect his head and upper body.[112] He is first seen using it in Chapter 124 (Episode 74 in the anime).
    Yōko Katori
Katori appears to have a preference for casting round Shields large enough to protect her torso, calves and part of her head when in an upright position.[113][114] When engaging the opponent from mid-range she may decrease its surface area and create an opening in it so as to discharge her handgun through it while protecting her upper-body.[115][116] Katori is first seen using Shield in Chapter 138 (Episode 78 in the anime).
    Yūta Miura
Miura exhibits a preference for casting Shields from the back of his forearm, generally from the arm that is not bearing Kogetsu.[117][118][119][120] His unfocused Shields are generally round and wide enough to protect his head and torso,[118][120][119] whereas unfocused ones retain their standard hexagonal shape.[117][121] He was able to cast one of the latter with enough accuracy to block Yūma's thrust.[121] Miura is first seen using Shield in Chapter 138 (Episode 78 in the Anime).
    Rokurō Wakamura
Wakamura exhibits a preference for casting round Shields attached to his right forearm which are wide enough to protect his head and torso.[122][123][120] He has shown the ability to morph his Shield around his firearm so as to shoot while remaining protected.[115][124] When it comes to focused Shields he casts them in the default hexagonal shape, and he has proven fast and accurate enough to intercept a Raygust slash[125] accelerated with Thruster.[126] Wakamura is first seen using Shield in Chapter 138.
    Kōtarō Suwa

Unlike other Gunners who engage the opponent from behind a Shield, Suwa prefers to save his second slot for a second shotgun or his Optional Triggers. Even when his Sub remains free he is reticent to erect the barrier, seemingly opting for preventing the opponent from fighting back at all with his firepower.[127] He does however activate it to protect his head when he believes to be in a Sniper's crosshairs as soon as he hears them fire, casting a focused Shield in its usual hexagonal shape.[128][129] Suwa is first seen using Shield in Chapter 89 (Episode 40 in the anime).
    Daichi Tsutsumi
Tsutsumi uses Shield when he is getting shot at.[130][131][132] in which he primarily uses it in the standard hexagonal shape[130][131], but has used a fixed, and focused one at the same time in an attempt to block a 3 way attack.[132] Tsutsumi is first seen using Shield in Chapter 198, however in the Anime he uses it in Episode 75.
    Kuniharu Kakizaki
Unlike other users of Gunner Triggers who erect a Shield while engaging the opponent to keep their mobility, Kakizaki prefers to fire his assault rifle from the cover provided by the environment,[133] nor did he deploy a Shield at any point while fighting Yūma with either Gunner or Attacker Triggers.[134][135] When ambushed by Osamu, he cast it in a round shape that protected his upper body and most of his head.[136] Kakizaki is first seen using Shield in Chapter 139 (Episode 78 in the anime).
    Kotarō Tomoe

Tomoe appears to favor combining his Kogetsu and handgun, so he does not summon a Shield preemptively, unlike other Gunners.[137][138] To defend against Chika's sniping, he erected a focused, hexagonal Shield from the back of his wrist.[139] He has also displayed the ability to cast his Full Guard from afar, creating large, round Shields and overlapping them with those of other agents.[6] Tomoe is first seen using Shield in Chapter 60 (Episode 27 in the anime).
    Makoto Chano
Unlike other Gunners who engage the opponent from behind a Shield, Chano prefers to switch to it only when under attack.[140] They favor a wide oval shape that protects their whole body and hovers close to their left forearm.[140] Chano is first seen using Shield in Chapter 54 (Episode 25 in the anime).
    Itsuki Fujisawa
Unlike other Gunners who engage the opponent from behind a Shield, Fujisawa prefers to switch to it only when under attack.[140] He favors a wide oval shape that protects his whole body and hovers close to his right forearm.[140] Fujisawa is first seen using Shield in Chapter 54 (Episode 25 in the anime).
