Murakami is currently the no. 4 Attacker in Border.[1] Thanks to his Side Effect, he surpassed his mentor in points in a little over six months.[2] This innate power in fact enables him to grow stronger at a terrifying rate, and it makes him a particularly dangerous opponent for enemies he has already fought, since his ability to retain nearly 100% of what he has experienced allows him to improve not only his general proficiency, but also to see through moves he has already witnessed with great ease.[3] The might of his Side Effect can be seen in his first 10-round match against Yūma Kuga, where, after assimilating the former's fighting style, he managed to turn the tides from 1-4[4] while his opponent was possibly holding back[5] to 6-4.[6] When the two fought again in a rank war, Yūichi Jin estimated Murakami to have a 80% chance of winning,[7] and it was in no small part through a mixture of previous planning and environmental manipulation that Yūma managed to defeat him.[8] Excluding Jin, whom he has never fought,[9] the only Attackers Murakami has more losses than wins against are Kirie Konami, Sōya Kazama and Kei Tachikawa, the three who currently outrank him, and Masato Kageura.[10] Against the latter his recent record sees him winning 40.5% of the time, while against Kuga he has a victory ratio of 61.2%.[11] As further testament to his power, during the large-scale invasion he was able to hold off three modded Rabbits,[12] each of which was estimated to be difficult for an A-rank member to handle on their own, and managed to deal significant injuries to two of them.[13]
Murakami is a dual wielder who fights with Kogetsu and Raygust, switching hands depending on his focus: when his primary concern is offense, he holds the former in his right hand, but when it is defense, he holds Raygust with it.[14] He particularly excels in the latter circumstance, and it was noted by Sumiharu Inukai that even two fighters of A-rank level like Yūma and Hyuse would have a hard time breaking his guard and reaching Tatsuya Kuruma behind him.[15] When the two caught him in a pincer attack while he only had Kogetsu, he was still able to maim Kuga and almost succeeded in cutting down Hyuse with a single slash.[16]
Regardless of his Side Effect, Murakami is very observant and proficient at seeing through and countering his opponent's tactics, which he proved twice against Yūko Kumagai when the latter had never used Meteor before, first by causing her to destroy her own trion Body[17] and then by neutralizing the trap she had left.[18] This talent and his quick reflexes[17] allowed him to save Border's away ship from Gatlin's arm cannon twice,[19][20] the second time managing to cancel out all of its remarkable power. Outside of his fighting ability, Murakami is valuable to Border due to being one of the agents compatible with Fūjin.[21]
Side Effect[edit | edit source]
Enhanced Sleep Learning (強化 睡眠 憶憶, Kyōka Suimin Kioku Lit. Enhanced Sleep Memory ?), Murakami's Side Effect enables him to absorb nearly 100% of what he has experienced after only a short nap and add it to his fighting repertoire.[22] It is thanks to this ability that he was able to rise to the rank of No. 4 Attacker in a relatively short time. It is often rumored that the same move will not be effective on him twice.[23][7] His Side Effect is also useful for teamwork: Inukai attributed to it the speed with which Suzunari First was able to render their new formation combat-ready.[24] Outside of combat, Murakami's Side Effect is known to have made him an above-average soccer player, among other things.[25]
Triggers[edit | edit source]
Kō Murakami's Triggers |

Type Normal | Kogetsu | |
---|---|---|
Classification Attacker |
Murakami is extremely proficient with this Trigger, the precision of his strikes matching his high ranking in Border.[4] It is his primary trigger when he goes on the offensive.[14] His swordplay is remarkably fast[26] despite him holding the heavy blade with only one hand.[27] Even when wielding it with his non-dominant one, he proved a dangerous opponent to Yūma and Hyuse.[28] During their confrontation he performed a complex stunt where he threw Kogetsu up from under his shoulder and grabbed it by the hilt from above it an instant later so as to strike two opponents at the same time regardless of the awkward position.[29] On one occasion, Murakami had the engineers change the color of his Kogetsu blade to black so that it would become invisible after the lights in the area were switched off.[30] He is first seen using Kogetsu in Chapter 44 (Episode 22 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Senkū | |
---|---|---|
Classification Optional |
Murakami seems to rarely rely on this Trigger, preferring to confront his opponent at close range. He can however use Senkū to remove several obstacles with a single swing of his sword and hopefully cut any enemy hiding behind them.[31] This tactic is particularly useful when he fights alongside Kuruma, so that the opponents are left defenseless against the latter's Full Attack.[32] Murakami can also activate Senkū for a lethal counter to pincer attacks, even if one of his opponents is coming at him from behind. When doing so, he seems to reduce the sword's length from the usual 15 meters to prolong the duration of the effect.[28] He is first seen using it in Chapter 172 (Episode 90 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Raygust | |
---|---|---|
Classification Attacker |
Murakami is a very prolific Raygust user. He generally sets it to Shield Mode for its high durability, but on occasion he will switch to Blade Mode, often in conjunction with Thruster. His guard is difficult to break even for more skilled Attackers[33] and multiple opponents.[34] He can close in on the enemy and parry with his shield and only move it aside after unleashing his own attack,[35] barely exposing himself even when the swing forces him to show his back to the opponent.[36] He can also angle the shield to disperse part of the power of attacks too powerful to tank head-on,[20] and has recently learned to protect both himself and his captain at the same time.[37] The shield is also useful to create distance between Murakami and his opponent,[38] By morphing it, he can trap the opponent's blade to unbalance them[39] or pin the opponent themselves to a surface,[40] so as to follow up with a critical Kogetsu slash while they are vulnerable. He also shapeshifts Raygust in Blade Mode to better throw it.[41][42] Murakami is first seen using Raygust in Chapter 44 (Episode 22 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Thruster | |
---|---|---|
Classification Optional |
Murakami can use Thruster in a variety of ways. He primarily utilizes it in conjunction with Raygust in Shield Mode to ram the opponent at very close range, knocking them back and leaving them open to a follow-up strike.[43] He can also use it to launch the shield at his opponent as a mobile barrier[44] and propel himself to accelerate and change direction in mid-air.[45] By using Raygust in Blade Mode, he can also activate Thruster to make his slashes faster and more powerful,[46] as well as to shoot the blade at a distant target[41] with great accuracy.[42] Murakami is first seen using Thruster in Chapter 99 (Episode 45 in the anime). |
Type Normal | Shield | |
---|---|---|
Classification Defense |
Although he generally uses Raygust for defense, Murakami can create a concentrated Shield to block attacks that Raygust alone cannot stop. Like the latter, he can tilt it to partially disperse the power of the incoming attack.[20] He is first seen using it in Chapter 134 (Episode 77 in the anime). |
